Mr. Stâle Amland (Avenir (UK) Ltd.) [UK]
Risk Based Testing (4M)

Ståle Amland is 37 years old and Norwegian. He has a Master of Science in Industrial Economics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, granted in 1985.

Over the last 10 years, Ståle has designed, implemented and maintained banking applications for a range of clients located in countries world-wide, including Norway, Great Britain, USA, Brazil and Australia. He has been employed by banks, financial institutions, consulting companies and software houses, and has worked as a programmer, system analyst, business analyst, project manager, test manager and principal consultant.

Ståle is the Managing Director of Avenir (UK) Ltd., the UK subsidiary of the Norwegian consulting company Avenir ASA.

Gualtiero Bazzana is Partner and Managing Director of ONION S.p.A., an Italian SME specialised in the fields of sw communications, technologies, consulting (for more details please refer to the home page, URL: http://net.onion.it/).

He matured and exploited know-how in conducting various medium sized and large projects for several companies in various application domains (telecommunications, data processing, MIS, process control, ecc.), covering topics like: sw development and testing, testing methods and tools, quality planning, test planning, reliability analysis, software product evaluation, process assessment and improvement, definition of quality systems in accordance to ISO 9001 and 9000/3, reviews and inspections, FDA computer system validation and so forth. He has matured significant technical experiences especially in the telecommunications domain (notably: switching systems and GSM mobile radio systems) in CIM and in networking, including Internet/ Intranet/ Extranet services and solutions.

His research activity spanned in various fields of software engineering, ranging from Petri Nets to development methodologies, functional and structural test coverage, metrics and related tools, CAST, reliability evaluation, software development process evaluation and improvement, management by metrics, software product quality evaluation, security, technology transfer and total quality management techniques. He has acted as Project Leader of several European Projects within the ESPRIT initiative.

Dr. Boris Beizer (Analysis, Inc.) [USA]

Keynote:Nostradamus Redux (K5)

Dr. Boris Beizer received a PhD in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. He has written twelve books, ranging from system architecture to his well-known pair on software testing -- Software Testing Techniques and Software System Testing and Quality Assurance -- both considered standard references on the subject. His latest book is Black Box Testing, an introduction to testing technology. He directed testing for the FAA's Weather Message Switching Center and several other large communications systems. He has been a speaker at many testing conferences and is also known for his seminars on testing. He consults on software testing and quality assurance with many organizations throughout the world.

Ms. Elixabete Ostolaza (European Software Institute) [SPAIN]
Staged Model for SPICE: How to Reduce Time to Market - TTM (8M)

Elixabete Ostolaza is Project Leader at the European Software Institute since March 1998. She is currently leader of two projects related with SPICE and EFQM models.

Elixabete Ostolaza was previously granted by the Basque Government and the European Social Fund taking part in several ESPRIT projects related with Artificial Intelligence, afterwards she was Project Manager in the Information System for Alliances and Subsidiaries Department of Telefonica, S.A., afterwards she has been Manager of Development and Maintenance of Information Systems in Directorate General XVI of the European Commission.

Elixabete Ostolaza received her BS degree in computer science from the University of the Basque Country and her Master degree in AI from the University of Aberdeen.

Mr. Bill Bently (mu-Research) [USA]
The Dynamic Information Flow Testing of Objects: When Path Testing Meets Object-Oriented Testing (4T)

William Bently is a software developer and software testing researcher. As a practitioner, he has most recently worked for companies such as the Bayer Corporation and the Upjohn Company developing high reliability software for biomedical applications. As a researcher, he has written several papers on a novel theoretical approach to software testing: the theory of dynamic information flow testing (Cd testing). He is currently investigating the application of this theory to the testing of Java objects and components (JavaBeans). William has served on the Quality Week Board of Advisors since 1992. He has a B.A. in Mathematics from Oberlin College and an M.S. in Biology from Ball State University.

Mr. Bogdan Bereza-Jarocinski (ENEA Data AB) [SWEDEN]
Is Software Testing Scientific? (RESERVE)

Since 1989, Bogdan Bereza-Jarocinski has been working with testing software and systems. he has been involved in different aspects of testing in a number of projects, mainly of real-time, embedded and telecommunications systems. For four years he was involved in hardware testing at Ellemtel (Ericsson R&D Company). After that, he joined a newly established test group at a consultant company ENEA Data, where he has stayed ever since. During his time as a consultant he has worked with test, test management, test automation and test methods improvement of development projects mainly for mobile telephony and embedded Java.

Recently he has become involved in general issues of Quality Assurance and audit of quality systems for software industry. Bereza-Jarocinski is active in SAST (Swedish Association of Software Testing) and was board member of this organisation 1997 - 1998. He supervised two university-level degree projects: "Algorithms for Test of Random Access Memories" (Uppsala University 1991) and "Model for Classification of Automatic Test Tools" (Stockholm University 1998). He has got BSc in Systems Analysis at the University of Lund (Sweden). He is frequently an instructor at ENEA test courses.

Bereza-Jarocinski studied general psychology at the University of Warsaw and received "Diploma in Organisational Behaviour" (post-graduate 1 year) at University of London.

Prof. Antonia Bertolino & Ms. E. Marchetti (CNR-IEI) [ITALY]
A Simple Model to Predict How Many More Failures Will Appear in Testing (9T)

Antonia Bertolino graduated cum laude in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa in 1985. Since 1986 she has been a researcher with the "Istituto di Elaborazione della Informazione" of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), in Pisa. Her research interests are in software engineering and dependability. Currently she is working at approaches for estimating and reducing the cost of debug testing techniques and at methods for the evaluation of software reliability. She is an associate editor of the Journal of Systems and Software.

Ms. Eda Marchetti, born in 1972, graduated "cum laude" in Computer Science at the University of Pisa in 1997. Currently she collaborates with the Istituto di Elaborazione della Informazione of the National Research Council (CNR), Pisa, Italy. Her research interests are in Software Reliability and Software Quality.

Mr. Robert V. Binder (RBSC Corporation) [USA]
Modal Testing Strategies for Object-Oriented Systems (TF)

Robert V. Binder has over 22 years of software development experience. He is President of RBSC Corporation, providing consulting and training in software engineering and software process improvement since 1984. He is author of "Application Debugging" (Prentice-Hall, 1985). "Testing Object-Oriented Systems" is under contract with Addison-Wesley. He writes a regular column on testing for "Object" magazine. His articles have appeared in American Programmer, Communications of the ACM, Computerworld, CASE Outlook, CASE Trends, Database Programming and Design, IEEE Computer, Journal of Knowledge Engineering, Journal of Software Testing, Verification, and Reliability, and Software Development. He is the Chair of a newly formed study group to develop an IEEE standard for built-in test for object-oriented software. Mr. Binder has an MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BA and MBA from the University of Chicago. He is an IEEE Senior Member, a member of the ACM, and holds the CDP and CCP.

Ms. Brigitte Klein & Mr. Bernd Freimut (Fraunhofer IESE / Allianz Life Assurance) [GERMANY]
Quality Assurance Technologies for the EURO Conversion - Industrial Experience at Allianz Life Assurance (8S)

Brigitte Klein received the degree Diplom-Betriebswirt(BA) in Economics with a minor in Information Engineering from the Vocational Academy of Stuttgart,Germany, in 1982. She was nearly 11 years with DEKRA, one of the largest German Automobile Surveillance, where she finally was team leader for "System Engineering Methods and -Processes". She was also responsible for quality management for the complete Information Technology Department to prepare for the certification based on DIN ISO 9001. Since 1996 she has been with Allianz Life Assurance in Stuttgart, Germany, where she is responsible for central data management and for the introduction and coaching of software engineering processes, -methods and -tools. Her software engineering interests concern above all software quality assurance and software quality improvements in practice.

Bernd Freimut received the degree Diplom-Informatiker (M.S.) in Computer Science with a minor in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 1997. He is currently a researcher in the department of "Quality and Process Engineering (QPE)" at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) in Kaiserlautern, Germany. His main research interests concern the measurement, evaluation, and control of inspection and test processes. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and the German Computer Society.

Mr. Bart Broekman & Mr. Christiaan Hoos (IQUIP Informatica B.V.) [NETHERLANDS]
Test Automation, Eternal Struggle or Lasting Benefits? (TE2)

Bart studied physics in Utrecht in the Netherlands. He started his career in IT at Philips Telecommunications & Data Systems, where he gained experience in programming, testing and quality assurance. Five years later he joined the software company IQUIP Informatica B.V. where he fulfilled assignments ranging from test consultancy to organising and managing large test projects. He aided in developing the structured test approach approach TMap, a de facto standard in the Benelux, and has implemented this in numerous organisations which have profited from his now more than 13 years testing experience.

At this moment he is a member of the R&D department of IQUIP Software Control Testen where he works closely together with Martin Pol. In this function he keeps track of current developments and trends in the testing world and develops matching test approaches, for instance on test automation and testing in RAD environments.

Bart is frequently giving courses in the Benelux on testing and he is regularly invited to make presentations on national and international seminars, including the last two EuroSTAR conferences, Unicom, FESMA, NOVI, EPIC, etcetera.

Mr. Mark Buenen (GITek Software n.v.) [BELGIUM]
Introducing Structured Testing in a Dynamic Low-Mature Organisation (11M)

After finishing Physics at Utrecht University, Mark Buenen started a career in the IT-industry in 1986. Mark started as a developer of mainframe applications and subsequently developed into the role of information analyst and project leader. As a consultant and project leader he was involved in various IT-projects, ranging from realization of complete new information systems, to maintenance and major conversion projects. Over the last years, Mark has specialized in test management and structured testing. At this moment he provides a number of large organizations with consultancy and support in the implementation of major test projects, structuring the test process, implementing permanent test organizations and improving the current test process. He is a speaker on testing at national and international conferences.

Mr. Hans Buwalda (CMG Finance BV.) [NETHERLANDS]
Testing with Action Words, a Quality Approach to (Automated) Software Testing (7T)

Hans Buwalda has worked with many major clients in the financial world, industry trading and government. From this experience he developed a new method for testing systems with support of automated tools, using a concept called "Action Words." The method has spread rapidly, and is now in use for a large number of organizations, large and small, in several European countries. Hans is a senior management consultant at CMG, a major European company for IT services. He is a frequent speaker for conferences and workshops on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dr. Antonio Cicu (QualityLab Consortium/MetriQs) [ITALY]
Managing a Customer's Requirements in a SME: A Process Improvement Initiative Using an IT-based Methodology and Tool (9M)

Antonio Cicu, master in Electronic Engineering, made the main steps of his career in Software Quality Assurance. He managed the definition process and operational application of organizational, methodological, and quality standards of the Software Engineering Division at the Research & Development Laboratories of Bull Italia, in Pregnana Milanese (Milano, Italy). He has been a reviewer in the ESPRIT projects SCOPE and METKIT, regarding the definition of norms for software products quality evaluation, and the development of education products for teaching software metrics. Member of AICQ, UNINFO, IEEE, and participant to the SPICE project, presently he provides consultancy and education services for software process improvement, as President of MetriQs Srl and Technical Director of the QualityLab Consortium.

Jim Clarke is a software test engineer with Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies in Naperville, IL. His current assignment involves exploring and implementing new testing technologies and processes for the 5ESS-2000(tm) Switching Project. Jim's testing career began in the early 80's, performing hardware/software acceptance testing for the U.S. Navy. Jim has been a software tester with Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies for 8 years.

John Corden is Millennium Director of CYRANO and Chair of the CSSA Year 2000 Vendor Group. CSSA is a world-leader in software testing methods and tools. CSSA (Computer Software & Services Association) is the United Kingdom information systems trade association. In his role at CYRANO John Corden is responsible for all matters relating to the Year 2000 including: CYRANO's Year 2000 Compliance Testing Method, TestStream 2000, Year 2000 Test Tool, CYRANO's Millennium Test and CYRANO's own products' Year 2000 readiness. In his role at CSSA John Corden chairs the CSSA's Year 2000 Vendor Group which develops and promotes best practice with respect to all Year 2000 matters pertaining to the UK information systems industry. John Corden has consulted world-wide with dozens of major organisations on the issue of Year 2000 Testing and through speaking and participation at numerous conferences is acknowledged as an authority on Year 2000 testing methods.

Mr. Charles J. Crawford (Blackstone & Cullen) [USA]
Year 2000 and the euro: Compliance testing and data management (1V)

Charlie Crawford is the Year 2000 Program Manager at Blackstone & Cullen, Inc., a software development and services firm in Atlanta. The company's principal Year 2000 product is Data CommanderTM, a testing, data management, and currency conversion tool that is platform- and language-independent.

Charlie has participated in Year 2000 testing engagements and also writes the documentation for testing tools. He taught in the University of Nebraska system before joining Blackstone & Cullen in 1996 and has many years' experience as an analyst, writer, editor and speaker. He has lived in Asia and Europe as well as several locations in the United States.

He has an M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Georgia Tech.

Mr. L. Daniel Crowley (IDX Corporation) [USA]
Cost of Quality - The Bottom Line of Quality (6M)

Daniel Crowley has been a promoter of Cost of Quality for over 10 years and is the QA Manager for IDX-Seattle, one of the largest healthcare information systems companies in the USA. He has worked as a quality-engineering consultant for over 20 years throughout the United States. Daniel has a BS in Computer Science and Business Administration and has completed graduate studies in Data Communications. He was an examiner for the Washington State Quality Award and has taught Information Systems topics at several colleges for 10 years. He also published many quality-related articles in his own column in the Kitsap (Washington) Business Journal. Daniel has worked as a quality engineer in aerospace, manufacturing, small business, financial, insurance and healthcare industries. He most recently returned from Ireland where he was a speaker to the Irish Computer Society on Y2K. He was a speaker at the QAI Seattle Software Quality Conference.

Mr. Thomas A. Drake (Coastal Research & Technology, Inc.) [USA]
Measuring Quality in Object-Oriented Software (TC2)
Panel:The Euro Conversion - Myth versus Reality! (10M)

Mr. Drake is a software quality specialist and management and information technology consultant for Coastal Research & Technology, Inc. in the United States. He currently leads and manages a U.S. government agency-level Software Engineering Knowledge Based Center's software quality engineering initiative. As part of an industry and government outreach/partnership program, he holds frequent seminars and tutorials covering code analysis, software metrics, OO analysis for C++ and Java, coding practice, testing, best current practices in software development, the business case for software engineering, software quality engineering, project management, organizational dynamics and change management, and the people side of information technology.

Mr. Drake has personally measured and analyzed over 80,000,000 lines of Java, C++, C, Ada, Fortran, PL/I, and Assembly code plus others. Over the past several years, some very interesting patterns have emerged. The result of all the analysis is a highly correlated set of measures that have been developed into a streamlined set of code-level release criteria. This data is then combined with defect density information derived from dynamic testing data from each "phase" or milestone of the development life cycle as a feedback loop for making informed business decisions to improve the quality of the software over time via the process by which the development project is delivered.

Mr. Drake has spoken at several international conferences and frequently conducts interactive and facilitated educational and general interest seminars on the people, process and technology sides of software development and enterprise-level information management systems.

He considers himself a quality advocate and a digital archaeologist.

He supports the "weak-link" theory of software development and the use of software entropy principles as a risk identifier for generating higher quality software-based information technology systems.

He is also involved in Y2K contingency planning and related business enterprise and mission continuity support.

He is currently focused on the development and use of product-level and reflected process-level OO metrics for C++ and Java.

He is the principal author of a chapter on "Metrics Used for Object-Oriented Software Quality" for a CRC Press Object Technology Handbook published in December of 1998.

In addition, Mr. Drake is the author of a theme article entitled: "Measuring Software Quality: A Case Study" published in the November 1996 issue of IEEE Computer.

Mr. Drake is listed with the International Who's Who for Information Technology for 1999.

Mr. Drake is a member of IEEE and an affiliate member of the IEEE Computer Society.

Bill Eldridge is EU Adviser's Office, Director at Barclays Bank PLC. Having qualified as a barrister he has now worked for the bank for nearly 20 years. This has provided him with a wide range of business experience in managerial roles from Marketing to Treasury. Latterly he has held senior positions in both the Corporate and Retail sides of the organisation. Most recently as a member of the Personal Sector Executive in the role of Strategy Director.

Istvan Forgacs received the M. S. degree in electrical engineering from Budapest Technical University in 1980. His research interests include program testing and maintenance, debugging and flow analysis. He has published about 20 technical articles. Now he is a senior research associate of the Information Research Group, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science in 1993.

Mr. Tom Gilb (Independent Consultant) [NORWAY]
Risk Management Technology: A Rich Practical Toolkit for Identifying, Documenting, Analyzing and Coping with Project Risks (10S)

Tom Gilb known worldwide as a lecturer and software technology author, devoted 80 pages of the earliest book describing inspection, Software Metrics (1976), to a description of software inspection methods. He has actively taught and installed and followed up the method internationally since 1975. He has consulted to key pioneers of Inspection at IBM development labs. He is the author of Principles of Software Engineering Management, and Software Inspections.

Mr. Manuel Gonzalez (Hewlett-Packard) [SPAIN]
System Test Server through the WEB (1S)

Currently, Manuel González works as a software engineer at Hewlett-Packard. He is in charge of quality assurance programs for the software related with their DesignJet printers (Large Format Printers). Before he joined Hewlett-Packard, he worked in the aerospace company of the Spanish government (CASA) developing Computer Based Training systems. He also worked in the University of Murcia's R&D lab in object-oriented formal methods (actually he is writing his doctoral thesis about this topic). He has several articles published and several papers presented in international and national conferences.

Dorothy Graham is the founder of Grove Consultants, which provides consultancy, training and inspiration in software testing, test automation and Inspection. She is co-author with Tom Gilb of the book Software Inspection, published by Addison Wesley in 1993. She and her partner Mark Fewster are currently writing a book on Automating Software Testing, to be published by Addison Wesley Longman in 1998.

Dorothy Graham was programme chair for the first European software testing conference, and has been involved in many conferences and seminars in testing and quality.

Dr. Matthias Grochtmann (Daimler-Benz AG) [GERMANY]
Evolutionary Testing of Temporal Correctness (11T)

Dr. Matthias Grochtmann graduated in computer science from the Technische Universitaet, Berline - Germany. He obtained his doctorate in 1990 with his dissertation on specification methods for user interfaces. Since 1990 he is collaborator and deputy head of the methods and tools group for Daimler-Benz AG, Research and Technology, in the lab Software-Technology. His research mainly focuses on methods and tools for the construction and analysis of reliable software systems, particularly in the field of systematic testing. An important part of his work is to transfer obtained results into practice.

Brigid Haworth has worked in the field of software development and testing for over 10 years. She has been active in software testing research at Bournemouth University(UK). This research was carried out with an industrial partner providing realistic commercial applications for application of research theory. This research aims to develop techniques for measuring test adequacy for object-oriented software. Initial results were presented at EuroSTAR97. The current presentation focuses on object level test adequacy measurement extending the theory previously presented. Brigid is currently resident in Erlangen, Germany, where she is working towards the completion of her PhD research.

Prior to joining Siemens in 1993, he was a research assistant at the University of Bochum, Germany, where he completed his doctorate in Electrical Engineering in 1992. He received the 1993 software engineering award of the Gesellschaft fur Informatik for his dissertation on software testing. Dr. Liggesmeyer is the author and editor of four books about software testing, analysis, and verification. With exceptional insight and experience in practical testing issues, Martin is a highly regarded presenter at conferences and training sessions throughout Europe and in the USA. He was involved in the development of the structured testing approach, TMap (tm). Under his management, TMap (tm) became the Dutch testing standard. Robert Poston is the Director of Software Testing Tools and Practices at Aonix, Inc. He has over twenty years of experience managing and developing software for communication, process control, simulation, radar, numerical control, business, and operating systems. He has degrees in electronics engineering, power engineering, and computer science.

A senior member of the IEEE, Mr. Poston received IEEE awards in 1971, 1980, and 1988 for his contributions to the engineering profession. He served as quality and testing specialist on President Reagan's 1984 People-to-People software engineering delegation to China. He chaired the IEEE Software Engineering Standards Committee from 1978 to 1982 and founded the first conference on Software Standards (SESAW) in 1982. For four years he developed, directed, and taught the IEEE Software Engineering Standards Seminars. Poston is co-chairperson of the IEEE Computer Society's Standard 1175 that defines interconnections among software tools.

Bob has written over 60 articles about software quality and testing, has served as a charter member of the editorial board of IEEE Software, and has lectured and taught in hundreds of professional forums. Today he is focused on automating software development and testing. His most recent book titled Automating Specification-Based Software Testing is published by the IEEE/CS Press.

Ms. Suzanne Robertson (The Atlantic Systems Guild) [UK]
Making Requirements Testable (TB)

Suzanne Robertson is a teacher and consultant specialising in modelling techniques for system development. She has co-authored courses on systems analysis and software design for both procedural and object-oriented systems, requirements engineering, quality assessment and problem solving. Suzanne is currently developing techniques for identifying and reusing requirements patterns.

In 1966 Suzanne started her data processing career working on a missile flight simulation system for the Australian government. She moved from scientific work to the commercial field, where she worked on the design and implementation of an on-line investment system. Her team developed a system that integrated invoicing, inventory control, creditors and general ledger software. A network of Honeywell computers, the largest in Australia, and a variety of intelligent terminals, linked over 100 businesses in four states.

Since 1978, Suzanne has consulted, done research and taught in Europe, Australia, the Far East and the United States. She specialises in helping companies to adapt modern software development techniques to fit specific projects. Her seminars and papers are well respected as sources of new software development ideas.

Suzanne and James Robertson are co-authors of Complete Systems Analysis: the Workbook, the Textbook, the Answers (Dorset House, 1994), a two-volume text and case study that teaches the core skills necessary for systems analysis.

Suzanne is working on research into reuse of requirements. The products of this research are a requirements filter for assessing requirements quality, and a pattern book for specifying business requirements.

Recent work in Poland has resulted in a process for training internal consultants. The process makes use of project clinics and and teaches technology transfer skills. The process, implemented in a large company over 2 years, has produced an effective team of 14 technical consultants.

Suzanne studied Information Processing at the New South Wales Institute of Technology, she is a member of the IEEE and is roving ambassador for the British Computer Society's Reuse Group.

Dr. Linda H. Rosenberg is an Engineering Section Head at Unisys Government Systems in Lanham, MD. She is contracted to manage the Software Assurance Technology Center (SATC) through the System Reliability and Safety Office in the Flight Assurance Division at Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA, in Greenbelt, MD. The SATC has four primary responsibilities: Metrics, Standards and Guidance, Assurance Tools and Techniques, and Project Support & Outreach programs. Although she oversees all work areas of the SATC, Dr. Rosenberg's area of expertise is metrics. She is responsible for overseeing metric programs to establish a basis for numerical guidelines and standards for software developed at NASA, to investigate the role of metrics in risk assessment and management of software projects, and to work with project managers to use metrics in the evaluation of the quality of their software. As part of the SATC outreach program, Dr. Rosenberg has presented metrics/quality assurance tutorials at GSFC, and IEEE and ACM conferences.

Immediately prior to this assignment, Dr. Rosenberg was an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics/Computer Science Department at Goucher College in Towson, MD. Her responsibilities included the development of upper level computer science courses in accordance with the recommendations of the ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Curriculum Task Force, and the advisor for computer science majors.

Dr. Rosenberg's work has encompassed many areas of Software Engineering. In addition to metrics, she has worked in the areas of hypertext, specification languages, and user interfaces. Dr. Rosenberg holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, an M.E.S. in Computer Science from Loyola College, and a B.S. in Mathematics from Towson State University. She is a member of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the IEEE Computer Society, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Upsilon Pi Epsilon.

David Talbot has been with the European Commission since 1989 where he is responsible for ESPRIT's activities in the area of Software Technologies. Prior to joining the commission he has spent the whole of his working life in the Computer business; he has worked on a variety of early computer systems; held management appointments covering technical, business and marketing activities and for four years worked on secondment to the UK Department of Trade and Industry as the first Director of Software Engineering in the UK Alvey programme. Graham Titterington is a consultant with Ovum Ltd, and is the editor of Ovum Evaluates: Software Testing Tools. He is responsible for monitoring developments in the software testing sector, and for researching into the tools and processes which support software testing.

He has 20 years of experience in Software Engineering and has taken a particular interest in rigorous development methods. His career started in the development of real-time systems, mainly for military and telecommunications applications. The experience of the difficulties faced in producing reliable and usable systems within physical and economic constraints led to an increasing interest in software engineering methods and tools. He undertook research in applying formal specification methods, the satisfaction of performance requirements during the early stages of the system design cycle, the use of object-oriented techniques in configuration management, and selection of test cases. Since then, he has spent 3 years applying rigorous techniques to the verification and analysis of safety critical software for the nuclear and aeronautical industries, and 1 year lecturing on software design methods.

He holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics, a M.Sc. in Computation, and is a Chartered Engineer and an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

In this position, he has also been active in defining software engineering standards, procedures, and methods to be employed at Brüel & Kjaer. He has managed software development projects for 25+ years; with Brüel & Kjaer from 1986, before that with the Danish branch of Control Data Corp- oration, and with Regnecentralen.

The author received his Masters Degree in Computer Science from the Danish Technical University in 1968. He has given public seminars, been associate teacher for BSc. level education in Computer Science, and is an active participant in Danish software-knowledge exchange groups.

Mr. René Weichselbaum (Frequentis Nachrichtentechnik GesmbH) [AUSTRIA]
Software Test Automation (1T)

René Weichselbaum was born in Zwetti, Austria, on July 5, 1971. He received the M.S. degree in computer science (with honours) from the Technical University of Vienna, Austria, in 1995.

René is currently pursuing a PhD in computer science at the Technical University of Vienna, department of software technology and holds the position of software quality manager at FREQUENTIS (founded in 1947, FREQUENTIS is the European market leader in air traffic control). He is also the Year 2000 programme manager. René worked in the area of software engineering for several years. Since 1995, he has been with FREQUENTIS, where he designed and implemented safety related software for voice communication system applications in the air traffic control domain (e.g. for Swanwick Centre, the world's greatest air traffic control centre in UK, and SAR Germany, the search and rescue centre in Münster.) Then he joined the Safety Processes team. In 1998 he moved to the area of software quality management. His research interests include software testing, particularly software test automation, software reliability, genetic algorithms and genetic programming.

Dr. Denise Woit received BMath and MMath degrees from the University of Waterloo, and earned her Ph.D. in Computing and Information Science at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario Canada in 1994. She is presently an Assistant Professor in the department of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto, Ontario, and holds an adjunct position as Assistant Professor in the Communications Research Laboratory, department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Woit's research interests include software testing techniques, software reliability and software engineering. Her consulting and research focus on providing automated support for building reliable software systems.

Avi Ziv received his BSc degree in Computer Engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in 1990, and his MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1992 and 1995 respectively.

Dr. Ziv joined IBM Research Lab in Haifa in 1996, and he is currently holding the position of a research scientist there. Dr. Ziv works in the fields of testing and reliability for both software and hardware. His other research interests include fault-tolerant computing and parallel and distributed systems.
